Lawrence Benito

Professor
Professor Lawrence began his Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2016 and earned his black belt in 2024 under Professor Adem Redzovic at Downtown Jiu-Jitsu Club in Chicago. His path to black belt has been anything but typical — he started in his late 40s and was often one of the oldest people on the mats. Aside from a few years of Tae Kwon Do and a single season of high school wrestling, his grappling experience was limited.
What Lawrence did bring was a lifetime of dedication to staying active. He’s completed both the Chicago Marathon and the Chicago Triathlon, and he’s passionate about strength training and mobility work.
For Lawrence, Jiu-Jitsu has been more than just a sport — it’s been a life-changing experience that’s shaped him both on and off the mats. It’s become an extension of his commitment to building community. For the past 25 years, he and his wife have made their home in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood, where they’ve raised their four children.
